Democratic council candidate Millie Thomas, a Baiting Hollow resident for 12 years and the owner of a real estate agency in Wading River, said her business sense and civic involvement have prepared her for a seat on the town board. As a business owner, she's had to make tough budget decisions and she understands that the needs of her clients come first. As a councilwoman, the clients are taxpayers, she said.

"I know how to set goals and establish a time frame for completion," Thomas said. "A good manager is accountable and we have to be accountable to the taxpayers."

There won't be a Democratic primary in the Second Assembly District.

Rocky Point attorney Jennifer Maertz today announced she is withdrawing her candidacy in opposition to the party designee John McManmon.

In a press release issued Friday, the Maertz campaign said it "recognized that the number of signatures that could be gathered by the July 11th deadline put the campaign at great risk of an expected challenge" by McManmon.

“It is not worth the time and expense of litigation, particularly where there are conflict of interest issues that have not been addressed by the State Board of Elections," according to an unnamed campaign spokesperson quoted in the press release.

The preliminary bout, was between Democrats Ann Cotten-DeGrasse and Angela DeVito who, at times seem to be involved in a grudge match over things that happened when both were on the Riverhead School Board. It wasn’t Tyson and Holyfield and no ears were bitten, and both had their rooters in the audience.

Both agreed that maintaining services without raising taxes was an essential philosophy given the increasingly heavy debt load Riverhead has. Black, Hispanic leaders launch Suffolk political effort

Black and Hispanic leaders vowed to unite for diverse political representation in Suffolk County as they launched a political effort within the Democratic Party Monday.

The newly formed Black and Hispanic Democratic Committee appointed co-chairs to represent the two minority groups and to hold seats in the Democratic committee that decides where to throw the weight of the party in local races.

It's time for black and Latino Democrats to realize that they have common issues at stake, said Assemb. Philip Ramos (D-Brentwood), who spearheaded the group's establishment.

Bishop "Save do not sell Plum Island"

ORIENT -- Congressman Tim Bishop was joined today by a coalition of elected officials and environmental advocates to announce the introduction of his new bipartisan bill aimed at preserving critical biodiversity and preventing further development on Plum Island by eliminating the current requirement in law that the island be sold at public auction.

Legislation passed by Congress in 2008 mandates the public sale of Plum Island, with the proceeds intended to partially offset the $1.2 billion cost of the proposed National Bio-and-Agro Defense Facility (NBAF) in Kansas. Democratic County Executive Steve Bellone Thursday proposed the merger of Suffolk's treasurer and comptroller's offices, both of which are run by elected Republicans, saying it would save $1 million a year.

Bellone released a report that said creating the single department would cut "duplicative" management jobs.

He said he will ask the county legislature to place a referendum on the November ballot to authorize the merger. If the referendum passes, Bellone would appoint an interim chief financial officer to run the new office throughout 2014, and an elected leader would begin a four-year term on Jan. 1, 2015. Suffolk is the last of New York's 62 counties to still elect a treasurer and comptroller.

Declaring that their time has come and promising to bring professionalism and good government to Riverhead Town Hall, Riverhead Democrats vowed to "hit the ground runnning" and get out the vote to defeat the Republican incumbent supervisor and council members in November.

The Democrats last night nominated South Jamesport civic activist Angela DeVito for supervisor and chose as her running mates veteran former assemblyman I. William Bianchi and real estate broker Millie Thomas for town council.
